This week, I’m sitting down with Jesse Chappus, who is the host of a top ranked Health Podcast called The Ultimate Health Podcast.

It was formerly co-hosted with his wife, Marni Wasserman (who you might recognize from tuning into her top podcast, The Ultimate Baby Podcast)

When you look at how long Jesse Chappus has been podcasting for, it’s safe to say he is a podcasting O.G.

He started his first show almost a decade ago, and in 2014 he launched his current chart topping podcast, The Ultimate Health Podcast.

To date, the show has collected over 16 million downloads and their roster of guest interviews in the health and wellness space would make any health nut drool.

In this episode, rather than pick Jesse’s brain about health, we’re pulling the curtains back on how The Ultimate Health Podcast became a global podcast sensation.

We’ll dive into…

  1. Secrets of his chart topping podcast

  2. The methods he uses for pitching world class guests to come on the show

  3. How they partner and land top quality sponsors & the journey of monetizing the show

  4. AND SO MUCH MORE

Enjoy this episode with Jesse Chappus.

Dr. Jesse Chappus, Welcome to the Visionary Life Podcast.

Though you and I have only been connected for a few months, I’ve known your wife Marni for almost a decade, as we used to cross paths in the vegan & plant-based circles in Toronto.

That feels like an eternity ago.

Today, you are the host of one of the most successful and long standing Health Podcasts called The Ultimate Health Podcast. Something you started with Marni all the way back in 2014, which has now recorded almost 400 episodes!

You’ve spoken with some of my faves including Kamal Ravikant, Molly Sims, Gabby Reese, Michael Hyatt, Dr. Will Cole, Dave Asprey… and so many more incredible individuals.

I can’t wait to dive into all things Ultimate Health & Ultimate Business with you today, Jesse.

Welcome!

To begin, I want to zoom the lens back a bit.

You weren’t always a podcaster, you actually spent many years running your own clinic as a Chiropractor. Can you give us a brief snapshot of that chapter of your life?

  • What were some of the biggest challenges of operating a brick & mortar clinic

  • Describe some of the most rewarding or most memorable moments

  • At some point, you must have decided to close the clinic & pursuit of impacting even more people - can you tell us about how you came to that decision?

  • Were you clear on what was next? I know that focus is something you’re quite passionate about, did you feel that lazer focus on the next chapter?

The Creation of The Ultimate Health Podcast

  • How much did you know about Podcasting at the time you decided to create your own show, this was back in 2013 / 2014 when podcasting wasn’t yet a “household name”

  • Did you have any idea if podcasting could be monetized or create income for yourself?

  • Today, the show has over 16 Million+ downloads, but I think it’s important to remind our listeners that you started with Zero Downloads!

    • To what do you attribute some of the early success of the show, before you built a cult following?

    • Why did your listeners love tuning into UHP?

    • Was there a tipping point, a point at which your consistent actions caused a massive spike in downloads? If so, can you pinpoint what you did that really worked in scaling the show?

    • What’s been the most rewarding part of creating & producing the show?

    • Any unforeseen challenges?

    • How do you continue to take your listeners' health to the next level beyond weekly interviews - are there any other main avenues for connecting with your listeners and sharing your wisdom?

Behind the Scenes

  • Running a podcast requires a tone of work (not only are you recording, but you’re prepping, managing sponsors, editing, show notes, emails, social, ec.) -  do you have any help or do you outsource any of the workload?

  • When you want to get in touch with a high profile guest, how do you ensure that your pitch lands in the right hands? Any tips on pitching guests?

  • You’ve successfully turned your podcast into a full time income -- is that primarily through sponsorships?

    • How do you put a price on an ad. Is it based on industry standard or business goals?

    • Are you reaching out to brands or do they reach out to you?

    • How do you discern who to work with & who not to

    • Let’s talk about your preparation process for the show - are you someone who goes down the rabbit role to prepare in depth, or do you like to have more casual, unscripted conversations?

      • What does your preparation process look like?

      • What’s your secret sauce for executing a flawless interview?

Growth of the show

  • I’m sure you get asked all of the time, but do you have any dream guests that you haven’t yet had a chance to sit down with

  • Recently, you started sharing the show on YouTube - why did you decide to add video to your production

  • Where do you want to take this? Where do you want to go?

  • Something you’re always doing is looking for ways to improve the show by 1%

    • What does this mean

    • Tell us some changes you’ve made recently to improve by 1%

What does ultimate health look like for you…

  • Ultimate diet

  • Ultimate movement routine

  • Ultimate brain function

  • Ultimate work-life balance

Now, let’s recap 3 visionary takeaways from this episode…

  1. When it comes to launching a podcast, make sure that monetization isn’t the ONLY goal.

There’s so much heart and soul that needs to go into a podcast and monetization is more of a byproduct, then an initial consideration. It took UHP many years to get their roster of sponsors, and it’s worth noting that they didn’t rush the process.

  2. Quality content that excites you is the most important factor in producing a Top Ranked Podcast!

If you’re not excited about the product, your followers won’t be either. Make sure you invest your time producing something you love and look forward to nurturing.

  3. If you’re feeling bored, uninspired or like you’ve hit a wall in your life, try to follow your curiosity and notice where you’re spending most of your free time.

If you’re constantly watching YouTube videos about crafting or you read all the literature about Keto Diets - there’s something there for you to explore.
