  • You are listening to the Visionary Life podcast. I'm your host, Kelsey Reidl.

Each week, I'll bring you conversations with the most visionary humans on this earth in hopes that you'll be able to absorb their wisdom, avoid their failures, and feel less alone on the roller coaster ride that is entrepreneurship. This season, I'll be chatting with creative thinkers, masterful marketers, brick and mortar shop owners, brand builders, and people just like you who have a story to share or a vision that inspires. If I can share one quick secret with you before we get into the episode, it's that we all have a little bit of visionary inside of us. You know, that spark that nudges us to pursue our full potential in this lifetime. But perhaps somewhere along the line, it got covered up. I'm here to tell you that it's never too late to explore that inner voice and access the brilliance deep down inside of you.

It's in you. It's in all of us. Let's dive in. Hey, visionaries. Welcome back to the show. It is officially June. As I sit down to record this, which is so crazy. Welcome to June, or whenever you're listening to this.

And this is a solo episode where I basically have no script, no interview. This is my attempt to stay in my joy and just share what's lighting me up. It's a little dose of visionary, if you will. And it's kind of a personal audio note from me to you. I share my insights from the week as a mama who also runs a business, who also loves to talk about marketing, who also loves to go mountain biking. So all of the M's and my goal is that this isn't just like a run of the mill podcast episode of like five ways to do X, Y, and Z, and instead for me to just crack open, share honest thoughts, personal musings, and whatever the hell I want, and to give you weekly content. I've been doing this show for six and a half years and have barely ever missed a week. And it's honestly wild to think that 350 episodes in, we're still going, we're still creating content.

And I really do believe that one of the reasons I've avoided any and all forms of burnout, especially with the podcast, and I've never wavered, is that I just keep asking myself what would feel good for me to record right now? So at one point it was, I want to go travel and record interviews. And so I did that. At one point, it was, I want to get in touch with top marketing experts and record with them. And I did. At one point it was, I want to sit down with my husband and record some episodes. So we did that. And now I'm in this new season of life. As many of you know, I'm a mama to a five and a half month old.

And I don't really have the working hours to be able to schedule interviews. But what I do have time for is just all day recording notes in my notepad on my iPhone. I am constantly just, like, thinking and jotting down ideas. And I also have nap times to sit down, whether it's for ten minutes before Freddie wakes up or maybe it's going to be a half hour episode. But it is so joyful for me to continue to evolve this podcast and to realize that my evolution may not be for everyone, but that's the only way that at this stage in life, I can show up, be authentic, to obviously continue to stay true to the roots of my business, which is sharing marketing advice and tools and strategies and helping you to stay in that visionary state so you can grow your business. But sometimes we veer a little bit off course and we chat about all things. So this is a little dose of visionary. And if you want this in written form, head to kelseyreidel.com dose dose.

And I send out a weekly email where I share three things that are lighting me up. And sometimes it's the book that I'm obsessed with. Sometimes it's a marketing strategy that has changed the game for me. Sometimes it's a story from a client that I am just so impressed with, like how they got 20,000 views within 6 hours on an Instagram reel. I break it all down. So kelseyridel.com dose, if you would like to join that, and I promise it's never gonna be AI generated content. Yes, I use AI. I love it.

I think it's the best thing ever. But I also can spot an AI written email, an AI written sales page, an AI written social media post from miles away, and I'm like, ew, ew. Ew. Stop. It's not. It's not as obvious, maybe to everyone. But once you start using AI, there's this tone of voice, there's this generality, and I'm just so sensitive to it now because it feels very impersonal. So this is really my attempt at bringing personality back to podcasts and to emails and to all the things.

All right, so let's dive into it. I think maybe I'll start with just life as a working mama. So it's crazy, because right now I'm in this season where I am watching Freddie, my five month old, full time. I do have two days a week where I have care for 4 hours and 4 hours, and that's when I see my one on one clients. And so those hours are completely booked up. And those are the 8 hours where I'm on meetings and then I'm charting and doing like all of the backend support for my clients. Outside of that I'm parenting. Outside of that I am training for a mountain bike race.

So it's not like I'm a competitive cyclist, but I do have a race in the middle of June and at the end of June, and so I'd say about 12 hours a week go to training. And then there's date night with my husband, which is date night in with Freddie, obviously. So making sure that my relationship has time in a week, and then there's like all the other things that happen. And I am so lit up by how having a kid, having a business, and having hobbies that you're training for, it really makes you evaluate your priorities. Like, there simply is not enough time in the day to do it all. And things that pull me away from family, usually a no, but things that myself and Dave and Freddie can do together, usually yes, but all that to say, life is definitely full. And my hope is that I look back at this time in twelve months. So fast forward a year, I want to look back at this time and say, you chose the right things, you prioritized what mattered, and you didn't overextend to making money in this season.

You didn't overextend to, I don't know, like try to become an olympian on the mountain bike. I really want to look back fondly of this time and know that I have a business that is still running even though I'm on mat leave. You know, we have a full roster of one on one coaching clients right now, website clients, corporate marketing clients. And truth is, I'm not looking to take anything else on just because I think that that would stretch me a little bit too much. But also, I am so grateful to have these projects and the two days that I work. So when I think of future Kelse, I'm like, yeah, I think I would be really, really proud of exactly how I'm spending my time today. And I'm always auditing. I am always doing time studies.

This is something I do with my client as well. Like just auditing your day or your week in 15 minutes, increments and saying, does anything have to go? I know for me for a while it was social media has to go. I just need to delete instagram. Just detracting from my priorities. And it's okay to get off of it for a bit. Hey, visionary. I have a really exciting announcement. If you live in southwestern Ontario on Friday, June 14, we are bringing together a group of 14 women and we are gonna have the most magical day long retreat.

Ten to four. So 6 hours. If you have kids or if you have a lot of other things on the go, this isn't gonna eat up your entire weekend. You don't have to drive too far. And it is in puss Lynch Lake, Ontario. We're hosting it for female entrepreneurs. Now. This is your chance to connect with other ambitious women in real life.

This is the most important. The secret sauce to business is making connections, having support and accountability, and a group of women who you can count on in the high times and the low times. And to really support you and be referring your business. So we will be gathering, coming together for a day filled with connection and conversation and business growth and nourishing meals and snacks. It's all included. We also have a epic breath work session. You guys are going to love, love, love the facilitator that we've hired. And again, this is going to be a six hour day together.

Ten to four in Puss Lynch Lake. So fully catered. Lunch, drinks, snacks, breath work, marketing session led by me. A mindset session. So if you are an entrepreneur looking to grow, you have big goals for 2024. And you know, you could use a CEO day that's filled with soul filling conversation, but also business strategy. Do not miss this. Send me a DM on Instagram right away at Kelsey Rydel is my Instagram handle.

Just send me the word retreat and I will get you details if there are any tickets left. This is super small, so we're curating a really cozy room, and we can't wait to see you there again June 14. So if you have the day, free, dm me on Instagram the word retreat. So if you've never done a time study before, highly recommend it. Just pull up a spreadsheet, jot down every hour of the day in 15 minutes chunks, and then literally say what you're doing and then color code it. Green means do more of this or keep doing this. Red means it's a waste of time. I need to outsource or eliminate or delegate it.

And yellow is maybe something that you just can't get rid of right now. Maybe you don't love it, but it just has to stay in the schedule. So I don't know. I think it's a good practice to get into. And, you know, one day I do have so many more. More ambitions to really start outsourcing more of the things that don't bring me joy. Like right now, I'm realizing cleaning the house doesn't bring me joy. And we used to have a cleaner.

We had one in Toronto and then we had one here when we first moved. And then Covid happened and her hours change. But I'm starting to realize, like, there is part of me that when I have a free hour, I want the house to be clean so bad. But is that my top priority? And is that the top usage of my time? And the truth is, no, it's really not. I should be paying someone to do that so that when I have a free hour, I can pour into something else that perhaps is more important. So either hanging with Freddie and being present with him rather than vacuuming 49 times, maybe it is taking care of my own health. So going on a bike ride or meditating instead of scrubbing the mirrors 30 times, maybe it is preparing a healthy meal instead of scrubbing the toilet. You know what I mean? Like, there is so many other things that I value more, but I also value a clean house.

I just don't necessarily want to be the one doing it. So, anyways, there's my reflections on time and how I'm spending it. Let's shift gears a little bit into what I've been up to in work mode. So I actually had a crazy moment a few weeks ago. So I may have mentioned here on the podcast that I actually started a new corporate consulting client. And they are a group of franchisees. There's 35 of them across North America, and none of them are necessarily marketing experts. So they all run local franchises and they're looking for ways to grow their business.

And so I am mentoring all of them and offering marketing trainings and challenges, et cetera. And so I actually had the opportunity to go to Toronto a few weeks ago and to deliver a live training with them, which was really, really cool. It had been a hot minute since I had given a professional talk to a group of people like think corporate boardroom. Everybody's watching you. Slides are up, they're asking you questions. You're standing there and delivering a 90 minutes talk. So I showed up and let's just actually rewind a bit. Like the weeks leading up to it, I was nervous af I was preparing, I was making sure that I had all my ducks in a row.

I was scheduling extra childcare and going out to Starbucks to work on my talk. And because it had been a few months since I had been in that environment, I was kind of like, oh, God, how's this going to go? Am I going to be fresh enough? Like, what if I don't sleep the night before? Because I have a newborn baby that still wakes up in the night and so there's so much room in my head and it's just the realities of being a working mama and committing to things like this. But I kept checking my mindset and saying no. Like, I've been working my whole life to give talks like this, right? So just because I may not have all the time in the world to prepare or to practice 5 billion times, I've done this before. And what was more is that the day before I was set to go to Toronto and deliver this training, my husband was in a golf tournament all day. So he left at like 06:00 a.m. wasn't home till 07:00 p.m. so the day before that I was like, okay, I really need a practice day.

I was actually supporting him in achieving his dreams. And so that day, I just remember being a bit of a ball of panic. I kept thinking, I don't have my shit together. I'm not sure that I am confident enough to go. I need more time to practice. But then here I was with my five month old thinking, no, like, Freddie's in need of me right now. I need to be with him, be present. And so practicing my talk today will be a bonus, but it's not a given.

And I don't know whether I'm going to have all this last minute cramming time. So anyways, had a couple breakdowns that day, which I think is normal, right? If you are pushing your growth edge, just prepare that things might feel uncomfortable. You may experience a surge of emotion. You might be hitting on some new feelings and just some new sensations in the body that are driving you to just be a little bit scared or worried or fearful. And that's when you need to pull up the courage and say, no, like, I'm going to do this. Scared, do it. Scared. Do it anyways.

And show up with my best foot forward and trust that I know what to do when I get up there. And, you know, recording 350 podcasts has prepared me for a 1 hour talk. Studying and working with clients on the topics of marketing and social media and search engine optimization for the last eight years has prepared me for this talk and just almost giving myself a pep talk, like being my own hype person. So I woke up Tuesday, bright and early. Of course, mama mode activated for the majority of the time leading up to my trip to Toronto. My husband had to go to work that morning. So here I was, like, multitasking, trying to get myself ready, trying not to get puked on, trying to practice my presentation, making sure that I had an outfit change, making sure that I was checking on the traffic report. Like, if you're a working mom, you probably relate to this.

I was like, my brain was in 900 places, and I was like, all I want to do is practice, but that's not going to happen. So my husband came home. I ended up taking off to Toronto. I had my clean outfit at the door, so I was feeding my baby, and then I get into my clean clothes, and I started my drive, and I just felt at peace. I started kind of running through the presentation, talking it out loud on my two hour drive into the city. And I arrived and I was a little bit early. So I thought, okay, I'm just gonna, like, pull by the venue, which was in North York, and I'm just gonna go, like, drive around the neighborhood, stop on the side of a street, touch up my makeup, have some water, have my, I packed, like, a little yogurt parfait for myself, some protein, and then we'll be good to go. And so I drive by the venue.

I actually missed pulling into the venue parking lot. So I drive by and I pull onto this street, and I'm like, wow, this looks so familiar. And I pull a little farther forward, and I see the street name, and I'm like, oh, I know exactly where I am. My last corporate, like, really big corporate marketing client, I actually went over to the founder's house a few times, and this was like, 2020, 2021, and they lived on that street. So that was kind of like, the reason why this is so full circle is because one of the reasons why I feel so fondly about taking on these bigger contracts is because I love going deep with my clients. And most of my clients I work with for a couple months, and I do a little bit of lighter work with them. But sometimes I'll take on a larger business, a business doing a million in revenue or more, and I'll kind of step in as their CMO. And that actually started back in 2020 when my first real b two b client took a chance on me.

And that's what kind of propelled me into being able to guide larger businesses towards success. So, anyways, I pull onto the street and I'm like, oh, my God, this is such a full circle moment because I'm sitting out front of the house where the founder of the company that had hired me for this huge corporate contract four years ago, and now here I am taking on my first big b two b contract post, having my baby, after taking some time off, and I'm in the exact same spot, and I'm like, whoa. So I just kind of, like, let it sink in how far I had come in four years. And the fact that I was right back here, right about to walk into a room full of people I've never met. And I knew, like, I. I have worked so hard for this. And I remember that initial meeting with the founder, and they pulled me into their kitchen table and they said, you know, we know you don't necessarily offer this as a service, but we want to hire you. And someone believed in me, and I just was flooded with gratitude, I guess that four years later, I'm still doing what I love with b two b.

I mean, I've been doing coaching for eight years, and I feel very grateful that I have a job that I love. So that was a little bit of a serendipity, serendipitous moment. The talk ended up going really, really good, so I feel very proud of that. And then I got in the car, drove home, did a little bit of, like, Toronto shopping, which is finding the best coffee shop in the area and buying a bag of beans and having a delicious scone. So it was kind of a nice way to treat myself at the end. So that's kind of what's been going on in work. Other than that, I feel like I've been going through these bursts of creativity lately. So if you follow me on Instagram, sometimes, you'll see I'm posting, like, punchy marketing truths and tips, but I'll go through these waves where I just fire off, like, eight pieces of content to my assistant and I'm like, I did all of this in twelve minutes.

I'm on fire. And I have some really good, just, like, content templates that I follow. So feel free to send me a DM on Instagram with the word content. And I can send you this template for eight pieces of content. And it's so good. I pull it up every time I'm motivated and inspired to create content, and I just, like, bang it out. It's awesome. So, yeah, that's been going on, and I truly feel like I've been able to stay on Instagram for the last eleven years creating consistent content and be like, I've mentioned 350 episodes into the podcast and eight years into my business and I feel like I've been so consistent and not hit burnout because I just continue to focus on what's bringing me joy.

And I never lose sight of the fact that without the excitement of the entrepreneur, without the joy of the human being who's doing the podcast, who's writing the blogs, who's creating Instagram content, the business suffers, right? And so I know a lot of you listening are in those critical first few years and you're starting your business. You are passionate, you are about to launch into this interesting time where you're going to be tested so much, you're going to put up posts and they're going to get zero engagement. You're going to feel like it's impossible to find your first client. You're going to really waver when you don't see rocket ship success. And what I want to encourage you to do is keep going, keep making sure that you create from a place of joy and don't burn yourself out by following everyone else's templates, right? There are so many people trying to sell you courses and telling you what to do and that you have to be on IG reels and Pinterest is the missing opportunity. And it's like, what are you doing? Because if that doesn't work in three months and you're not seeing crazy money coming in, and even if you are, if you don't like what you're creating, then I almost feel like you're missing the point. And that's when burnout creeps in. And then you resent your business.

So if possible, try to stay in that place of joy. Try to stay in that place of creativity and excitement towards what you're building. And the moment you waver away from that, ask yourself, what can I do to get back on track? Right? And sometimes that's going to be go pursue a hobby outside of your business. Go get some wins, find success outside of your work, because you may not be validated as much as you want to be through the business that you're creating. What I mean by that is, say you launch your own health coaching business and you're not necessarily seeing consistent leads, you're not getting all the opportunities that you dream of, you're not necessarily seeing the financial returns quite yet. And sometimes that can just code your DNA in a bad way, saying, I'm not that good. This isn't going to work. I'm a failure.

I need, I'm so far away from success. So sometimes in that situation, number one, keep going. Like, don't quit before the success happens, but go find a hobby outside of your work that you can find more immediate results. Like maybe you join a run club and participate in their five K trail run. Or maybe you start volunteering somewhere at the local library and you get to volunteer every Tuesday with the kids program. And you find so much validation in that. Whatever lights you up, go find that outside of business because your business isn't always going to give you the motive in the form of immediate return. So just make sure you have more going on outside of relying on your business for all of your self worth.

Like, it's just, I feel like that's a recipe for disaster for me personally right now. I mentioned to you guys earlier, I'm signed up for a mountain bike race and I find so much joy in the training. And anytime I'm feeling stuck or sticky with work, I know, okay, 06:00 p.m. comes around, I have a ride, I get into nature, I'm with my friends, I'm laughing, and then I reassess. Like, oh, my problems aren't that big. Like, just because, you know, I didn't get a good open rate on emails or my website. One of the pages broke down. It puts it all in perspective, right? And then you don't fixate and ruminate on things that truly do not matter.

So speaking of things that matter and things that do not, I was on my mastermind call last week and I meet with a group of six incredibly high level, inspiring entrepreneurs. We meet once a month and someone asked such a deep question that's got me thinking a lot lately. And it was they were talking about writing your eulogy and your funeral and kind of fast forwarding your life, saying who are going to be the people and who are the connections that you have that will be at your funeral? Like, kind of just asking you what are the quality of your relationships right now? And then someone chimed in and said, you know, there's actually a better question. And it's not not who's going to be at your funeral, but who's going to still be there for your family, your partner and your kids three months after you're gone? And I was like, whoa, whoa. Like, that hit me like a ton of bricks. And for context, the person that I was chatting with was saying, you know, I have all these, like, superficial connections and friends in the digital world. But when I really thought, who's going to be there for you and your family three months after you're gone? That is when he kind of woke up to the fact that, like, I don't have community right around me. I don't have tight knit friendships that are going to be there for my kids should I pass away? And I realize it's a bit morbid, but it really had me thinking about why it's so important, despite this beautiful age of social media, to have a community right within your geographical limits.

Like, people who you can walk to and knock on their door and say, do you have some sugar that I can borrow? Like, back in the olden days, you know, people that in a pinch, you could call and say, can you just, like, come watch my baby for five minutes while I have to go to this emergency? People that if you can't pick up your kid from school, they can grab them. People who you can have over for a weekend barbecue. And it's not a big thing. People who you can just walk around town and bump into randomly and just know that, like, these are the roots that only geographical proximity can offer. And I know there's, like, this craze, especially in the entrepreneurial world of, like, work remote and be a digital nomad and go pick up and live off the grid. But for those people, it's like, do you. Do you have a strong enough community, or does that really isolate you from what matters? And I just found that question really powerful, so I wanted to share it with you today. There's also a wonderful woman in my mastermind, and she's a powerhouse.

She actually does sales team hiring for really big companies, and she actually has such an interesting process of building out sales teams. And this is why she's been able to work for some really large companies and has done the hiring for people like Deepak Chopra. And she was kind of saying recently, like, you know, my house is a mess, and my kids are pretty feral, and I haven't, you know, like, done these trivial things in a long time. But guess what I have done. I've built three companies. My kids and I are traveling the world. She's like, I have sex with my husband every day. Which I kind of love that she said.

And she said, and you know what the sacrifice is? The house is a disaster. You know? And it just reminded me, like, we really need to tune into our own priorities. So for some people, keeping your house tidy, having, like, a perfectly put together family room and kitchen and up to date decor and all the things. Maybe that's important, and maybe you place value on that. But guess what? If that doesn't bring you joy, you don't have to place value on that. If traveling doesn't bring you joy, you don't have to book trips, because everyone else is. If it does bring you joy, you should sell your home and go be digital nomads. If your kids aren't perfectly polished, but it's at the expense of them just having the most fun life.

That's amazing, right? And it was really cool to listen to someone with such a large entrepreneurial, like, success in the past 20 years, basically saying, like, pick what matters, because people look at her and say, how do you have time to do all this stuff? How do you have time to travel the world? How do you have time to build all these businesses? And she's like, well, I do have time, but the things that you make time for, I don't. So I've freed up my time by really doubling down on your priorities. And so I think the theme of this episode is like, do you know what lights you up? Do you know what you should be doing in a day? For me, it's being a present, mama. It's mountain biking, and it's studying marketing and pouring into my one on one clients. Everything else has to be a bonus. Eating healthy is up there as well. But even sometimes that, like, we keep it so simple. I, like, throw chicken in the crock pot with some spices, or I, you know, I eat scrambled eggs every day, which is, like the most boring thing ever.

But again, it's like, if I wanted to prioritize elaborate meals, I would, if not, whatever. Or last night we had a barbecue with a bunch of friends, and instead of making homemade chicken and beef skewers and cutting the peppers and washing the onions and chopping the chicken and going to the market and sourcing the best beef. I was like, you know what? I think I'm gonna buy pre made skewers. Yes, they're more expensive, but guess what? The ease of entertaining went from, you know, like, a ten stress level to a zero. Because I was like, you know what? Nobody's gonna care whether I homemake these or not. So something's gotta give. Always choosing your priorities and really just auditing your time, I feel it can send you to far places in life. And someone who has a really good book on that or just listening to his podcast, is Dan Martell.

He is the host of the growth Stacking podcast. He's the author of buy back your time. Great book, great concept, and yeah, I really love it. All right, well, I'm recording this on Nap time. Little guy is waking up so we will wrap it here. Thanks for listening to Dosa Visionary, a little solo show with no agenda that is is far from AI generated and I just really appreciate you guys listening. Any feedback or comments that you want to leave, head over to Instagram. I'm Elsie Rydell and just FYI, we have two live events coming up in puss Lynch Lake, Ontario.

We have a full day retreat filled with organic food, breath work, mindset, coaching and marketing, and connecting with other female entrepreneurs. So if you want to attend that, dm me the word retreat. We also have a meetup happening in July, so if the June date doesn't work, just send me a message on Instagram with the word meetup and I think that's it. So we'll wrap it here. Thank you so much for tuning in. I love you guys and I will see you next week. And thanks for listening to the Visionary Life podcast. Thanks for tuning in to this episode of Visionary Life.

I love bringing you these conversations on a weekly basis, so it would mean so much to me if you could help me out by rating and reviewing the show on either itunes or Spotify. It just takes a second and if you don't want to rate the show, you could also just take a screenshot of the episode and share it on your social media platform of choice. Tagging me Elsieridel. I'll catch you in the next episode. Some of the messages that I got from my private clients in the past two to three weeks are I just booked three discovery calls for tomorrow or another client said she earned 20,000 in revenue from one email sent using a template that I gave her or that their website is now SEO optimized so it's ranking in search engines. Finally. And one of my clients just saw a traffic jump, so number of people coming to her site from 4000 last month already at 19,000 impressions for this month. Another client just signed a new client of theirs using direct response marketing strategies that I teach.

And this is the power of hiring a one to one marketing consultant. And that's me. I will take the time to review your business. I'll check on the foundation. So have you selected the right niche? Is your offer easy? Resistible? How is the pricing strategy? Are you clear on your value proposition and ultimately what's going on with your marketing funnel? How are you attracting clients? How are you nurturing them and bringing them closer. And then are you inviting them or able to convert them into a paid client? So if you're struggling to grow your business, if you can't find consistent clients and you really want to become fully booked, then you may want to invest in marketing support. Marketing is the start of your sales funnel and without an effective strategy, you're likely missing out on hundreds and thousands of dollars. That stops here.

Working with me as your business and marketing coach will help you identify new income opportunities right away and to optimize your lead generation strategy. Kelseyridel.com privatecoaching if you head to my Instagram, you're probably going to see a video where in the most picturesque lakeside market, in one of the cutest towns in Ontario, we gathered 13 amazing entrepreneurial women. We had hairstylists, we had real estate agents. We had lawyers. We had naturopathic doctors. We had beekeepers, we had photographers. We had Google Ad specialists.

And we hung out for 2 hours. And we had really amazing snacks and drinks, coffees, and we had these amazing Twix bars that are 100% clean. And we just chatted about the highs and lows of business. Emily and I facilitated a two hour discussion about everyone's business, what they're working on, what their challenges are. And then we walked out of there 2 hours later with new connections and a deepened sense of joy and fulfillment and knowing that we're not alone in our business. So I would love to invite you to our next meetup. There was such high demand that we're hosting a second one Friday, July 19. And if you can come dm me the word market on Instagram.
