Say Less, Get More
(aka Get What You Want Out Of Your Life!)
Press Play!
Today, I’m sitting down with Fotini Iconomopoulos.
Fotini is a Negotiation Expert!
Yepp, that’s right, it’s a real thing to study the art of getting what you want (and what you deserve) out of life!
For all of you grumbling saying “I’m just not confident enough to negotiate for what I want” or “I just feel like men are better than women at negotiation” - that stops here, because Fotini is going to bust all the myths and stories you’ve told yourself about using negotiation as a success tool.
Most recently, Fotini decided to package up all of her expert wisdom on the topic of negotiation into a book called Say Less, Get More. I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of the book, and I can say with confidence that there are MANY valuable takeaways for anyone who wants to get MORE out of their life.
Aside from being a new author, Fotini also teaches MBA students, she’s a regular on various television programs, and she’s a popular speaker.
In this conversation, Fotini and I chat about…
-
Why negotiation is such an important skill to have and the reasons most of us avoid learning the art of it
-
The importance of POWER in successful negotiation and how to harness it
-
How to increase your likeability in negotiations
-
Why everyone needs to make A “FEEL GOOD FOLDER” on their desktop
-
& MORE
We all need to negotiate throughout our weeks… Some of you will be negotiating for a pay raise at your FT job and some of you will be negotiating with your little ones to do their piano practice-- either way, you’re going to love this episode with Fotini Iconomopoulos.

Fotini, welcome to the Visionary Life Podcast!
I am about ½ way through reading your book and oh my goodness, I had no idea the topic of Negotiation interested me SO much.
It’s been fun to read through it and think back to many times in my life when I could have used your frameworks to get what I wanted: from negotiating the salary of my first job, to negotiating with my parents to get a dog (which never worked)-- negotiation is ALL around us!
Why is negotiation such an important skill for our listeners to improve upon?
To set the stage, let’s learn a bit about Fotini as a child. You were nicknamed “the negotiator” as a kid, and in the dedication of your book it reads…
“To my family, who sealed my fate by giving me loads of negotiation practice”
Tell us about what it was like growing up in your family and why negotiation was an essential tool in your toolkit.
RAPID FIRE ON YOU…
-
How would you describe yourself in just 3 words?
-
Besides your own book, what’s the best book you’ve read in the past year?
-
What’s your favourite way to wind down after a long workweek?
-
Favourite thing about your job
CHAPTER BY CHAPTER...
You start by breaking down a very important principle, which is that negotiation isn’t always about a cash deal or monetary transaction, which we often default to.
You realized early on that you could negotiate your quality of life…
In chapter one, you break down the basics…
We’ve touched on the importance of negotiation, but yet still so many of us avoid negotiations to “keep the peace”. Why is it that as humans (particular women), we often choose to avoid negotiations?
What are the outcomes of becoming a great negotiator? (you say-- you can start chipping away at retiring a few years early if you negotiate for more money, and that those who did negotiate their salaries managed to receive offers that were better by an average of 7.4 percent)
Can you talk about the importance of Power in successful negotiations?
What does it mean to have Power in a negotiation?
Where does power come from?
How can we build confidence?
How does time pressure actually give us more power, as a negotiator?
In chapter 3 you explain the principle of “People over spreadsheets” and explain the power of human relationship.
Relationship building is something I am very passionate about in advancing our vision forward, because we can’t do it alone!
Can you share some relationship building secrets that can actually help us to negotiate more successfully?
You touch on how to become more likeable, which is key to winning deals. How can we become more likeable?
