Press Play!

Today, I’m sitting down with Rivers Corbett.

Rivers Corbett is a serial entrepreneur, a passionate mentor, and most recently he is the founder of an experience company called ChefTorial which offers virtual culinary experiences hosted by Top Tier Chefs, that you can tune into from the comfort of your own home!

The idea to launch ChefTorial was actually a pivot that Rivers was forced to make when COVID hit, since his previous company taught all in person events - so this conversation is one of adapting, pivoting, and responding to change.

… Something Rivers is NO stranger to!

He’s been an entrepreneur for over 20+ years and has learned a thing or two about what it REALLY takes to succeed.

In this episode, Rivers and I discuss…

  • How he was able to start a Chef Talent Agency, even though he’s not a chef (& how you can do the same)

  • Why it’s important to look for the opportunity or lesson in every challenge

  • How taking care of yourself is actually priority #1 as a business owner

  • The books that he recommended all new business owners read

  • Why his burger chain, Relish, ended up shutting down due to bankruptcy

  • Why it’s important that we normalize failure

  • & so many other real lessons

& be sure to check out the ChefTorial website to book your next event.

As I mentioned, I had the opportunity to test out an experience (Mexican night!) with my friend Hillary & we had SO much fun making tacos and eating churros.

I especially loved the “SOCIABLE!” moments.

These are totally unedited, and give you an idea of what I do to get ready for the interview.

Let’s start with ChefTorial…

I had a chance to attend Taco Night with chef Jillian.

We made Lime Margaritas, Tacos & Cheater Churros. The food was AMAZING and the experience was equally as memorable.

For those unfamiliar with ChefTorial, you are the premier virtual culinary experiences company. Can you tell us more about ChefTorial and why it exists!?

ChefTorial

ChefTorial actually came out of COVID, when your in-person cheffing business was no longer able to run due to restrictions!

  • First - how did you feel when you realized that your business was essentially put on pause, so abruptly?

  • Did you know that you’d be able to pivot? How did you keep an open mind when everyone else seemed to be in “panic mode”?

  • What sets ChefTorial apart from every other culinary experience?

Serial Entrepreneur…

  • You’re a serial entrepreneur! How many businesses or projects have you created?

  • What have been some of your Major Career Milestones?

  • Was there ever a time when things weren’t going very smoothly in your career? What was going on and how did you move through those challenging times?

  • What does a day in your life look like at this point?

One of the businesses you started was a Burger Chain called Relish!

  • Culture was something that your team was very passionate about building into the brand - why is culture vital to an organization's success?

  • You had FUN in the workplace: all of your burgers were named, you shouted your customers names when their order was ready, and there seemed to be a positive dynamic in your stores… Why was this an important part of Relish?

  • You’re an advocate of BEING DIFFERENT, because when you’re different people talk about you. For the business owner who has NO IDEA what sets them apart, how can they begin to explore?

  • In an interview you don’t just ask “where did you go to school” you ask “do you believe in bigfoot” - have there been other quirky processes or strategies you’ve used to attract really good team members or to grow your own personal network?

Your passion for marketing…

  • From hosting webinars, to creating referral programs, to paying for TV ads, to direct mail-- there are so many ways to market your business...

    • When someone comes to you with a business & no marketing plan, where do you begin

    • What are some of your preferred marketing strategies?

    • In your opinion, what makes a successful marketing strategy?

    • What are some of the time-honoured principles when it comes to successful marketing that you ALWAYS come back to

  • How did you become a marketing master? Who did you learn from or how did you pick up on key information?

  • On the homepage of your personal website, you say that you can find any business $10,000 in less than 45 minutes, guaranteed - and I believe it! But, what do you mean by this?

Zagging when the rest Zig

In a TedX Talk that you gave, you shared this concept of Zagging when everyone Zigs (which I love)

  • Can you explain what you mean by this?

  • What’s an example of a business or brand that seems to have Zagged in a world of Ziggers?

  • Have you always been an “outside of the box” thinker? How do you stay away from group think or doing things like everyone else?

  • In high school, it’s all about being part of the in crowd - in business you want to be part of the “out crowd”

  • You think that Universities should teach HOW TO THINK and I couldn’t agree more

  • At the end of your life, do you want to be part of the Zig Crowd or the Zag Crowd

Now, let’s recap 3 visionary takeaways from this episode…

Three things I want to double tap on

There you have it, my episode with Rivers Corbett!

Let’s recap 3 awesome takeaways, shall we?

  1. Takeaway #1 is to make failure part of the process.

As Rivers said, we need to normalize failure in our first 5 years of business! It’s literally part of the process, and is all part of the learning phase, yet we’re all so afraid of it and do anything in our power to avoid failure or at the very least, we just don’t talk about it. But failure isn’t a bad thing! It’s data, it’s metrics to move forward in a bigger and better way.

  2. Zag when everyone else zigs.

This is actually a core value of the Visionary Brand, so I was pretty stoked to hear Rivers talk about this.

I love his perspective on thinking outside of the box and not being afraid to do things differently, in fact, that’s something we should ALL strive for and it’s something we reflect deeply on inside of The Visionary Method.

  3. Take care of you, first.

Nobody is immune to depression and dips, not even passionate entrepreneurs. Thank you Rivers for opening up about your dips.

It’s vital to know what keeps you feeling your best, and to do those things daily or else you cannot show up for your business fully. Self-care, as much as that term has been overused, is truly the first priority in running a business. Without you, there is no vision!
