Natalie Brite | Building a Business that DOESN'T Harm Others
Natalie Brite
Founder of The Conscious Business Method
Press Play!
Today, I’m sitting down with Natalie Brite.
There’s a lot of toxicity that exists in the social media universe and in the online business space, right now.
On a daily basis we are exposed to...
-
Hustle culture, the idea that working more is better
-
We’re exposed to influencers who are selling us products they’ve never even tried
-
Coaches are using fancy cars & designer handbags to project that they’re living a dream lifestyle, when in reality they are just as scared as you that they won’t be able to pay off their next credit card statement
I can’t even believe this is where we’ve landed, but it’s real!
When we really step back and look at what’s happening, we can see that many of these toxic business rituals are rooted in insecurity and scarcity, and many of them are just unethical.
As business owners it is our duty to stay true to our moral code and to build a business that’s reflective of our core values.
Since we often pass along what WE were taught to our own communities, we have to adopt the Top Down Mentality whereby Better, More Conscious businesses STARTS WITH US.
This is exactly what our guest of the show today will be addressing.
When thinking about how I could introduce the topic of Ethical Business to you, my visionaries, an incredible entrepreneur named Natalie Brite came to mind.
Natalie Brite is a writer, educator, mentor and consultant for the topics of ethical business ideation, branding, content marketing, service development, and transformative leadership.
In this episode, Natalie and I talk about…
-
How she stumbled into the realm of Conscious Business and what exactly it means to build a business consciously.
-
The top business and marketing trends she’s seen thus far in 2021
-
How we can shift back to a people over profit model
-
The problem with manipulative marketing
-
Why she encourages her community turn up the rebel, revolutionary and visionary archetype right now
-
Harmful business systems that we currently accept as “normal”
-
Flipping the way we practice marketing and selling
-
Her definition of “Growth Mania”
-
Death and birth + business as a cycle
-
Why the Hustle Economy isn’t right for everyone
-
Why it’s impossible to exist in a constant state of growth
-
Manipulation marketing and why it’s harmful
-
Conscious business trends for the first quarter of 2021 & more
If you want to build a business that aligns with your values, that feels good in your conscience and that is reflective of your mission in life… this is the episode for you.

These are totally unedited, and give you an idea of what I do to get ready for the interview.
Natalie,
Welcome to the Visionary Life Podcast.
I’ve been a mega-fan of your work ever since one of my students tagged me in some of your Instagram Content saying “I think you’ll jive with her approach to business & leadership” and sure enough, I did.
Your teachings focus on building and growing what you call an Ethical Business-- one that you describe as rooted in authenticity, creativity, and & sustainability.
These words make my heart thump with love, because I don’t see enough leaders talking about these vital principles so I cannot wait to dive into this conversation with you today.
To begin can you tell us how you found your way to Conscious Business & Ethical Leadership? Was this always your path?
Becoming an Entrepreneur
-
Did you always envision yourself starting your own business?
-
How many bad ideas did you have to shuffle through, before landing on The School of Conscious Leadership?
Let’s talk about visibility.
You share some amazing strategies for getting more visible inside of our businesses including; gifting, collaboration, and co-creation. I want to pick your brain on a few of these...
-
Collaborating - you say that partnering up with others truly is everything. How have partnerships accelerated the growth of your business?
-
Co-creating - you say that interacting with others, sparking convos, asking your community questions, etc is key to creating a meaningful community. Can you expand on what it looks like to co-create a community, in real time?
I was browsing an incredible Free Guide you have available through IG, all about The Top Business Trends of Q1 - 2021
Let’s double tap on a few of these trends...
-
Great virtual customer service will become a non-negotiable
-
What are some of the ways brands are falling short when it comes to customer service?
-
-
Making a name for yourself in your local community
-
Getting more personal, vulnerable and intimate with your audience
-
For those listeners who have personal brands, does this mean opening up more about their thoughts, beliefs and opinions?
-
-
Getting creative with how we connect and host events Turning up the rebel, revolutionary and innovator archetypes
Content Trends
-
Creating exceptional experiences through the content you share
-
How can we do this, when content can sometimes feel like a one way conversation
-
-
Using SEO to help you build organic traffic to your content
-
Prioritizing cultivating relationships over making sales with content
Community Trends
-
Gauging the success of your community building off of the results and feedback your community is giving you instead of the numbers and analytics
-
The age of profit > people is done and we are going to be called in to focus entirely on impeccable service development & delivery
-
Offering flexible and inclusive pricing models, or sliding scale
-
What does this look like for your business?
-
Let’s talk Leadership...
-
Something you’re passionate about is saying goodbye to BORING leadership that requires you to fit a mold, regurgitate existing content and be someone you’re not…
-
Why do you think so many business owners feel pressure to be “polished” in their leadership, so much so that they hide who they really are?
-
How did you work on cultivating your leadership skills?
-
When did you feel like you had truly found your voice?
-
What are you REALLY effing good at when it comes to running your business?
-
Self Care Journey
-
In another podcast, you mentioned that you needed to take a few months towards the end of 2020 to do some “Ghosting & Coasting” - can you describe why this was necessary and how it went?
-
You were seeking restoration. Why is that vital for you as a leader?
-
How do you prioritize yourself as a CEO each day, so that you can show up with the energy needed to run your business?
Keeping the Vision Alive
-
How do you balance “thinking what to do next in what you’re already doing” vs. “painting a picture for 5 or 10 years from now”
-
Talk to us about your process - is it structured or casual? Yearly? Monthly?
-
Where do you want to take this? Where do you want to go?
-
You recently relocated to Portland Oregon - was this part of a longer term vision for your life?
Now, let’s recap 3 visionary takeaways from this episode…
Three things I want to double tap on…
-
The parallel between Nature & Running a Business.
Just like the 4 seasons, as business owners we also need to honour our personal transitions & seasons.
Not every season is for hustle and grind, and nor can it be without reaching burnout. It’s okay to take a Winter in your business, where you hibernate, rest and as Natalie calls is “ghost & coast” -
The concept of Growth Mania!
I am totally going to borrow this term from Natalie because it’s spot on to what we see and hear about, when it comes to what it takes to grow a business and be successful.
Contrary to popular beliefs, this type of 24/7 strategy is NOT the golden ticket for all businesses, and can actually accelerate your success because it pushes you to burnout and resentment. -
Is SEO the new Instagram?
As you know, platforms like IG demand daily content from us, but have you taken a moment to check in on the return on investment?
I loved our conversation around how to build longevity into our business strategies, one of which includes investing time and energy into improving our Search Engine Optimization or SEO. I have seen drastic leaps in my SEO performance over the past year, and at this point most of my clients are finding me via SEO.
