5 Types of Email Subject Lines That Will Boost Your Open Rates | Kelsey Reidl, Marketing Consultant

Are you an Online Business Owner who is struggling to grow an email list, connect with your subscribers and increase email open rates?

It’s vital to use effective subject lines that grab your readers’ attention. After all, even the most brilliantly crafted message won’t matter much if no one actually opens it!

Read that twice.

So many of the clients that work with me in my 1:1 Business & Marketing Coaching Program are spending 2-6 hours per week crafting well-written, research-backed, story-packed emails– but the truth is, if the subject line is no good then the content won’t even be read!

What a shame, right?

Today's blog is for entrepreneurs who are looking for practical strategies for creating compelling email subject lines that will persuade your readers to click into the rest of your email.

These copywriting tricks are easy to understand, and you can steal these templates right away and test them with your Email List!

I’ll go over 5 types of email subject lines that have been proven to help boost open rates across industries and business niches. If you have success with any particular subject line, don’t be afraid to reach out and let me know!

The β€˜Open Loop’

This type of email subject line is like a brain teaser, because it provokes curiosity on behalf of your subscriber. The only way for them to satiate their curiosity is to OPEN the email and read through until they have their answers!

Here are a few examples…

  1. Instead of a Black Friday Discount, I am doing this…

  2. My husband said β€˜hey you should sell that’ and then I made $7,874 πŸ€‘

  3. Want to know my Morning Routine, %FIRSTNAME%?

  4. I get this question DAILY when it comes to growing on TikTok

  5. I used to be SO ashamed of this πŸ™

The Random, So-Confusing, Yet Really Intriguing

This type of email subject line is effective because it makes very little sense, and is open to interpretation.

Why are Jewel and Joe Rogan in the same sentence?

Who’s obsessed with spiders - ew!?

There’s a lot of talk about Greek Yogurt and I’m going to crack it open to find the truth!

For this type of email subject line, the more random the better!

Can you pair 2 subjects together that don’t normally find themselves in the same sentence? If so, give it a shot!

It should be noted that your subject line SHOULD make sense as it leads into the content of the email, for congruency!

Here are a few examples…

  • Adventures, new websites, beer and smoothies..

  • Suddenly, we’re all confused about Greek Yogurt

  • Joe Rogan and Jewel taught me something

  • TikTok, Reverse Goal Setting and My Obsession with Spiders

  • What do Toilet Paper and Business have in common?

Open Up To Get Your Answer!

This type of email subject line is similar to the Open Loop in that it provokes curiosity on behalf of your subscriber, but it’s more specific to something that your subscriber has already opted into or is keen to learn more about.

It’s less mysterious and more objective information.

Here are a few examples…

Open to find out:

  • What do your quiz results say about YOU as an entrepreneur?

  • Your results are INSIDE (ready to reveal them?)

  • Are you a 1 or a 10, %FIRSTNAME%

  • How long does the average person spend scrolling Instagram? Open to find out!

Let’s get personal, personal!

This type of email subject line expresses something about you, the writer of the email, and like many of our other categories - it provokes curiosity and allows the subscriber to get to know you better!

You might find that personal anecdotes, stories from your life, and the moments where you really crack your heart open tend to perform best with your email list!

That’s because this content is original to you, cannot be copied, and is less corporate than the average email! If you haven’t already experimented with personal content, here are some ideas.

Here are a few examples…

Personal:

  • Imposter syndrome got the best of me (a personal story)

  • I fired all of my teammates. And I feel awful…

  • 2 feet of snow changed my Monday…

  • re: Our Conversation

  • re: Your Instagram Bio (& how to fix it)

  • I set a CRAZY goal for this month - and I’m scared to death

  • My divorce is teaching me to be a better Doctor. Here’s how…

Email Subject Lines - Category # 5

Aspirational

This type of email subject line inspires the reader and paints a picture of what’s possible.

Your subscribers are motivated, driven individuals and they love a success story and any anecdote that showcases what’s truly possible for them.

Here are a few examples…

  • She has 566,000 followers on IG for a reason (& you can too!)

  • The best parenting advice I ever received

  • From high school dropout to 7-figure entrepreneur

  • How to start a business as a Virtual Assistant (even with ZERO experience)

That’s it!
