151 NHL Defenseman Connor Carrick is Committed to the Long-Game

Connor Carrick is an NHL Veteran of 200+ games going into his 8th year professional, currently with the New Jersey Devils.

He launched The Curious Competitor Podcast to explore what fuels holistic personal and professional growth for himself, his guests, and his audience.

Connor is wise beyond his years, and has so much to share when it comes to growth, goals & getting the most out of your life.

I met Connor at an event back in April of 2020 and he really stood out among the crowd.

I picked up on his strong work ethic, insatiable pursuit of growth, and hunger to maximize each and every day… chasing his most visionary life everyday.


Not only does he train full time as a National Hockey League Player, but off the ice he hosts the incredibly popular Curious Competitor Podcast.


He’s also a husband, and has a little one on the way (or perhaps here) depending on when you’re listening to this.

THE PODCAST

  • For so many of our listeners, they have a dream (like starting a podcast) yet there’s something standing in their way, most often it’s a mindset block…  I’d love to know, did you face any hesitation or self limiting beliefs when you thought about starting your show?

  • Were you afraid of it taking away from your performance on the ice or elsewhere in your life?

  • Why did you decide to add Podcasting to your resume? What need did it fill in your own life, and how do you hope it serves the listeners? THE WHY

Giving yourself permission to be multi-dimensional -- so often, we put ourselves into a box (aka I’m an accountant, I’m a hockey player, I’m a Mom… but what if you gave yourself permission to unlock all facets of who you are)

  • You are the first active NHLer to enter the world of podcasting. How has the show been received & what can we expect in the future?

WHAT’S POSSIBLE

I was taking a Peloton class this morning with one of my favourite instructors, Robin Arzon and she was sharing her experience of quitting her job at a busy NYC law firm to pursue her passion of fitness, after battling many years of feeling stuck. She mentioned that she had this epiphany of “why not me” one day, and so she quit.

Is that the same mentality that had when it came to becoming a Pro Hockey Player? Why did you decide to pursue such a challenging path, as a young person?

  • Did you always have such a strong belief in your capabilities as a human being?

  • Is there ever a voice that creeps in and tells you to give up, go home & stop trying? If yes, how do you knock it down? 

  • You’re not just a dreamer and a visionary of what’s possible--  you’re an action taker and you seem to be hungry to learn, apply & grow your knowledge base everyday of your life -- whether it’s learning about better coffee, better cellular energy, better mindset, better recovery, better olive oil. How do you prime yourself to be hungry for more, everyday? What keeps you motivated to learn and advance yourself.

  • What’s something you’re geeking out on right now, that’s expanding your mind?

CHOOSING TO BE ALL IN

I recently read this quote by author and writing instructor Natalie Goldberg on how to improve your writing (or anything else) and it caught my attention, so I’m going to read it here and ask you a question based on it… 

She says… "In order to improve your writing, you have to practice just like any other sport. But don't be dutiful and make it into a blind routine. "Yes, I have written an hour today and I wrote an hour yesterday and an hour the day before."

Don't just put in your time. That is not enough. You have to make great effort. Be willing to put your whole life on the line when you sit down for writing practice. Otherwise you are just mechanically pushing the pen across the page and intermittently looking at the clock to see if your time is up.

From what I gather, you’re an all in person. You don’t just show up and mechanically put yourself in your training and assume that because you got to practice - that’ll do.

Same goes for your podcast, you are an engaged and attentive host.

    In this day and age of endless opportunity to develop ourselves both personally and professionally, it’s also so important to pause and remind yourself that you don’t need another course or coach to be your best. You’re enough the way you are.

    We know that visualization is such a powerful technique and as I mentioned, it’s like a dress rehearsal for the performance which is your life.     Even if it’s never been done before, go and chase a dream. Connor is an example of this, and though he worried about how his coaches would receive it, he’s proved that he can be all in on his hockey game and produce a great podcast + brand in his spare time.
