Today, I’m sitting down with Jana Webb!

The world is a better place because of people like Jana Webb.

In addition to being the founder of a wildly popular strength -based Yoga Method for athletes,  Jana is also a fighter, a resilient mom, an entrepreneur, and an unstoppable visionary who has pushed through numerous setbacks and challenges in her life.

One of those setbacks was a life or death car accident that happened in the Dominican Republic which left her body broken, just a mere few days after she had signed a million dollar lease for her first physical JOGA Studio in Toronto.

It’s hard to imagine how she could have possibly persevered through a broken back & a traumatic brain injury in order to continue to bring her dream fitness studio to life, but she did.

What started as a curiosity in how she could bring Yoga to athletes has turned into a journey beyond what she could have imagined.

Simply following her inner voice when it felt confusing has brought her to a place today, building JOGA as an Online Brand that is helping train athletes & certify instructors all over the world. To date, over 700 individuals have moved through JOGA training. Wow.

In this episode, Jana pulls the curtains back for us on…

  • How she was introduced to yoga in her early years as a form of rehab after a car accident

  • How yoga & particularly her method JOGA saves her life after her car accident, and why she was in the Dominican to begin with

  • Why she signed on to the cast of The Real Housewives of Toronto

  • What it was like to build a business from her hospital bed

  • The heartbreak of running out of money & closing the studio

  • How she has found opportunity through COVID 19

  • Why she’s decided to be more open, honest and vulnerable rather than pretending everything is ok

  • & MORE

These are totally unedited, and give you an idea of what I do to get ready for the interview.

Jana Webb, welcome to the Visionary Life Podcast!

I first came across JOGA about 7 years ago when I worked for Vega as a Marketing Manager, and then most recently I was sitting on an airplane headed to British Columbia and I stumbled on this mini series called True Calling and there you were, as one of the featured segments.

In the short video, I watched as you showcased how far the JOGA brand had come (JOGA is now being taught to NHL’ers, NBA, MLB, NFL, MLS and Olympians) and the in the latter part of the series we watched as you got into a horrific car accident in the Dominican Republic, which you describe as a life or death moment.

As I’ve been catching up on all that you’ve been up to in the past few years, I can say with certainty that your journey is inspiring and one that our listeners are likely to take a lot of wisdom from,

Thanks for being here today.

TAKE US BACK:

  • You were in a car accident growing up, which pushed you into your first rehab journey - which is actually when you first learned about yoga. Can you tell us about your first exposure to Yoga and what you thought of it at the time?

  • Did you know immediately that you would devote your life to this practice?

  • Some years later, you found yourself in Japan and you encountered Yoga once again, this time individualized yoga that is specific for your DNA…

  • What happened when you got back from Japan? Did you go all in on JOGA?

MOMENTUM:

  • The strength coach from Calgary Stampeders (a professional Canadian Football Team) called you.

    • How did he know about your work?

    • At the time, had you ever taught high level athletes?

    • Did you have any doubts or imposter syndrome?

  • Sometime after getting the gig with The Stampeders, you also got a job with the Toronto Argos

    • What was it about JOGA that these Sports Teams were loving?

    • What were some of the results that the athletes were experiencing?

    • Did you start to run short on time? How were you staying afloat?

LAUNCHING THE JOGA CERTIFICATION:

You had 7 teacher's sign up for the first certification. Today there are 400+ certified JOGA instructors.

  • When did the idea to launch a “teacher training” come to be?

  • Was it challenging to package up your IP and put it into a teachable framework?

THE CAR ACCIDENT:

In November 2016, you were at the top of your game and you had an opportunity to train athletes in Dominican Republic. This is when you found yourself in a terrible car accident, one you describe as a life or death moment. You woke up in the hospital with a broken back and traumatic brain injury…

  • What were you thinking in those first few days? You are a busy entrepreneur, mama and go-getter like me, so I can’t imagine what goes through your mind at that point

  • You were able to walk a mere 7 days later and in the social media posts that you shared, you’re smiling and seem positive. You said “I will be better” like it was not even a question. Have you always had this “glass half full mentality”

  • What are some ways you set yourself up to have a positive mindset, no matter what happens

  • You say that you built JOGA House from your hospital bed.... Tell us about that chapter

What a full circle moment: you were introduced to yoga because of an accident, then it saved your life.

WHERE YOU ARE TODAY:

  • Tell us about where JOGA is today as a brand

  • Do you have a vision for the future of the company?

  • What’s been one of the most exciting and memorable milestones that you’ve reached with JOGA?

  • What’s been most challenging about growing the business?

ENTREPRENEURSHIP:

  • What’s one character trait or skill-set you would tell our aspiring entrepreneurs to focus on building or learning? Maybe something you wish that you had learned earlier?

  • Have you implemented any new tools or systems lately to help you leverage your time?

  • Do you have any daily routines or rituals that keep you sane, as a busy mom and entrepreneur

JOGA:

  • Hybrid of sport, yoga, relaxation

  • Builds strength and increase range

  • We are the governing body of Yoga for Sport; NHL, NBA, MLB, NFL, MLS and Olympics, Golfers, Swimmers

  • Help athletes find their highest degree of success - stability and mobility

  • For SPORT and RECOVERY

  • Do you have a passion for training athletes? To change the game?

Now, let’s recap 3 visionary takeaways from this episode…

Three things I want to double tap on

  1. Jana teaches us the art of flexing our resiliency in the wake of traumatic events, and not giving up through the setbacks

It would have been easy for her to give up on her dreams, to allow her accident to consume her, and to stop moving forward in the wake of setbacks… but she pushed through and never gave up on her purpose, which is very admirable.

Having that bigger why is SO important, because whether small or big, we will all encounter some setbacks on our journeys.

  2. Another key takeaway from Jana rests in the power of relationships!

She was a master of leveraging key relationships & keeping in touch with those who she met along the way, knowing that each person could play a role in the success of her business.

This is something I preach inside of TVM, that you can’t just sit inside your office and hide behind a screen! You must be making new connections, meeting new people everyday, and expanding your network in creative ways in order to have a thriving business.

  3. Sometimes we have no idea why little nudges hit us, but when we follow them there’s often a reason for them.

Just like Jana had no idea why she said yes to a $10,000 yoga teacher training in Japan, we’ve all had those little pings that we often tend to ignore!

In Jana’s case, she finally listened and followed the inner voice that said GO FOR IT. The inner voice never lies!
