You've got a lot going on. You have hobbies, you have family, you run an epic business.

Sometimes the days go by quickly and you're like, oh, I didn't get as much output as I wanted to.

That's where search engine optimization can be so epic.

When we create and publish content that helps our search engine optimization, the algorithm of Google and of other search engines actually picks it up.

And for years to come, that article might sit on page one of Google. Your website might continue to pop up because people are finding a lot of value in what you've created. And you don't have to go back in and edit it all the time. You don't have to go create a new viral piece of content. So there's a lot of longevity.

Personally, I don’t want to be on social media content creation hamster wheel FOREVER. I want my content to live on longer and meet my dream client where they are spending time, which is often on the search engine.

Did you know there are 3.5 billion (yes, that is correct with a B not a M) searches made on Google

EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.

That is huge.

Imagine your next discovery call, the person says “I found you on Google…”

How good would that feel to hear!?

Let’s chat about some basics of SEO and How to Choose the Right Keywords:

There are two types of website that I encounter when I work with clients:

A. Basic, Poor Performing Websites

These are websites that have not been built with consideration for search engine optimization.

This means they generally only have 4 navigation pages:

  1. Home,

  2. About,

  3. Contact and

  4. Services.

If this is you, you are not alone and you are in the right place.

Lots of my clients come to me with this type of website and wonder why they aren’t getting hits from Google.

Truthfully, it’s because your website is a little tiny island in the ocean of the internet, and no one can find it!

B. Highly Structured, Robust With Content Websites That Are Performing Optimally

Then there are websites where the individual has thought of SEO aka building out more pages and valuable content for users such as:

  • Highly Requested Tools,

  • Training Archives,

  • Themed Blogs,

  • Course Portals,

  • Speaking And Media,

  • Upcoming Events,

  • Recipe Databases

In this scenario, your website is now a bigger island in the ocean of the internet and it is a lot easier for people to find it.

Your first action step is to identify what type of website you currently have? A tiny bitty island website or a big, full one?

STOP YOUR SCROLL! 🛑

Did you know…

Between 70 and 93% of all online experiences start with a search engine like Google.

As soon as they open their web browser they're searching for something right off the bat.

So, by not being visible on Google, people won’t find your work plus building out a search engine optimization strategy is FREE.

It’s time to talk about KEYWORDS.

Keywords act as the bridge between your website and somebody searching on a search engine.

The keyword is the bridge that will transport them to your website .

A good keyword is written in your customer's language. I know some of us can use a lot of jargon and industry specific words, but is that what your dream client is typing into Google to find you?

This is why talking with your existing customers is so crucial. What are the terms they are using when describing your work? These will be the words they are most likely searching on the web.

Once you have identified the keywords, you are going to use a FREE tool called Google Keyword Planner.

You might be wondering what makes a good keyword? Let’s illustrate an example.

You are a product-based business, you make Dog Food…

“Dog Food” will be your main keyword.

The issue with the simplicity of this keyword is that it doesn’t show the user's intent.

Is the individual looking to buy Dog Food, or to cook a DIY Dog Food recipe, or are they looking for a brand with that name?

As you can see, you ‘Dog Food’ is not necessarily a high intent keyword since we don’t know in what context they are even looking for that word.

This is where these three words TOFU (top of funnel), MOFU (middle of funnel), BOFU (bottom of funnel) are extremely important.

TOFU – Top of Funnel Keywords are going to be the really generic ones where it’s not clear if someone is truly looking for you (ex: Dog Food)

MOFU – Middle of Funnel Keywords is the sweet spot.

This is where the magic occurs. Here we know they are seeking a solution and they are ready for a piece of content for you.

(ex: Organic Dog Food Near Me OR How to make Homemade Dog Food for Huskies)

BOFU – Bottom of Funnel Keywords are usually branded keywords like “Allie’s Organic Dog Food”. Mostly used when a customer already knows about your brand!

Your next step is to use Google Keywords Planner and record the average monthly searches for all the keywords you have identified for your business.

If it's a zero, it may not be a keyword we want to prioritize.

Get between 10, 20, 30 keywords, and just start to imagine what people are typing into Google.

Then you're going to identify whether it's TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU.

Well visionaries, that’s all for today’s post about Intro to SEO and How to Choose the Right Keyword.
