How to Write an Instagram Bio for your Business (With Examples!)

How to Write an Instagram Bio or TikTok for your Business (Examples & Ideas) | The Visionary Method

Did you know that you could be losing out on paid clients simply because of a Poorly Written Instagram Bio?

Social media bio’s (the 200 characters beside your profile photo!) are one of the most important elements of your Social Media Profile - yet most business owners put very little thought into them.

This is your opportunity to make a great first impression and to show potential clients what you’re all about!

If you know your Instagram Bio needs a refresh, then let’s dive into it some tips 😏

WHY DO YOU WANT TO HAVE A COMPELLING SOCIAL MEDIA BIO?

Let’s first start with understanding why it’s important to have a great Instagram Bio.

If you’re running a business, you’re likely spending anywhere between 1 to 10 hours per week creating content in the form of Posts, Reels, Blogs, or Tweets. That’s a LOT of time!

And I’m sure that your goal in creating all of this content is to have your Dream Client discover it, and see so much value in that content that they will click through your profile and in that split second they will make the decision to follow you (or not!)

Read that sentence 2x to understand how quickly this happens!

As business owners, we have such limited opportunities to capture our Dream Clients attention - so ensuring that your Bio is well written is essential to building your following.

All of this to say, your page needs to be appealing, bold and eye-catching. And, the 200 characters you select to craft your bio needs to be carefully selected.

Take a look at this quick diagram…

The goal is to have a clear, compelling and concise Instagram Bio - in addition to producing regular high quality content.

By doing this, overtime you will find a consistent follower growth which will allow you to nurture those connections eventually leading them to your paid offers which means new paying clients.

HOWEVER,

If your Instagram Bio is poorly written,  you’re missing out on potential leads. This will lead to not many regular follower growth therefore not finding a lot of new clients through your social media.

Your goal is to land on the top right quadrant after your finish reading this blog 😉

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ESSENTIALS FOR A GOOD BIO

ESSENTIAL #1 :The Importance of showing your face

If you’re a personal brand or service provider, you need to be in your profile photo!

People connect with people which is why showing your face will help you build relationships and build trust with potential clients.

A photo of you (where you’re smiling and looking into the camera) vs. a plain logo is going to perform better.

If you don’t believe me, you be the judge ⬇️

Which one speaks to you more? I’m going to go out on a limb and say the image on the right.

ESSENTIAL #2 : Who is your bio currently speaking too?

If I were to go on your Instagram Profile today, is your current bio reflecting the goals and desires of your visionary dream client (VDC).

(p.s if you are unclear about who is your visionary dream client click here to uncover it 🙃)

One way to unlock what your VDC wants is to put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself:

  • What do they want to learn about ?

  • What problem could I solve in their life, through my content?

  • When they open Instagram, what are they seeking?

Make sure that your bio and your content reflect your answers to the above questions.

ESSENTIAL #3 : Exactly what to write in your Instagram Bio

You only have 200 characters to persuade someone to give you a follower or/and take action, so it is best to be short and to the point (eliminate any excess words).

You don’t want to have run on sentences, and I would highly recommend using bullet points when possible (#visionarymethod copywriting tip!)

Here are the three things you want to communicate in your Bio:

  • Who you are

  • What you do & the problem you solve

  • What action the follower should take, next

Remember - the less confused your follower is, the better odds you will get a paid client.

BONUS TIP:

It is so easy to fall into the trap of talking about yourself in your bio and/or content but unfortunately it’s not about you. You need to be sharing what YOU can do to help them!

Before posting any type of content ask yourself:

  • Is this helping the audience I am serving ?

  • Am I addressing their pain points?

  • Why should they care?

Don’t get me wrong, you can include some personal anecdotes in your content and in your bio, but try and make it 80% about them and 20% about you.

Let’s review some great examples of people who have Well Written Bios on various social media platforms.

#1 TIKTOK

Meet Darius.

He is a professional photographer. His bio is super simple and he uses the formula:

I help _(who he helps)_ to do _(what he does)_.

He has a very catchy and simple first line.

He modified his bio after his audience on Tiktok started calling him the selfie coach.

NOTE: It’s okay to have different bios on various platforms as the audience you may attract may be attracting slightly different things.

Meet Miss Excel.

She has a super simple bio and is basically able to describe in four words what she does.

She gives herself a quirky title - Microsoft MVP

By doing so, she creates an open loop with her audience.

Don’t hesitate to have fun with your titles.

She mentions she was featured on Business Insider Fortune which gives her credibility.

Since she gets a lot of inquiries about brand partnerships she makes her email available.

NOTE: Do you have anything which can give you credibility in your industry? Have you been featured? How many clients have you served?

Meet Doone.

Doone is being very clear on the type of content you will see on her page. She has 3 content buckets which are :

Biz Breakdowns

Money Mistakes

Biz Tips

I don’t recommend using the same word twice however she is being very clear on what you will get from her Tiktok Page. She is basically saying if you don’t care about any of these three topics you are in the wrong place.

She also mentions what she does: Host of Female Startup Club.

NOTE: Are you able to categorize your content into pillars?

#2 INSTAGRAM

Meet Jereshia.

Since her name is already in her handle she uses the name slot to write words that identify the word that she does:

Marketing, Sales, Online Coach

This allows her to be very searchable on Instagram.

She then uses her bio to right away the three outcomes you will receive when working with her. If you are looking to:

Clarify your program

Refine your curriculum

Launch your $3k-$10k group coaching program

Then, this is the page for you

I love how she used action oriented verbs. She knows her industry well as she is mentioning important things individuals aspire to have in that field.

Meet Dr. Rachel.

She decided to use her profession title in her name slot - Fertility Naturopathic Doctor.

She also gives herself some credibility by adding a metric in her bio saying she has helped 100s conceive and maintain healthy pregnancies.

BONUS TIP: If you have a Brick and Mortar do not forget to include your address and location.

Meet Raw Meat Experiment.

This account is definitely not for everyone. 😂

But, this individual is documenting their journey eating raw meat at Whole Food everyday until they die from bacteria.  INSANE, right?!

When you come on this account, you know what to expect. He is also using metrics on whether he will live for 5 days or 500 days.

#3 TWITTER

Meet Zain.

He is using the formula.

I do ______ so I can do ______.

I deconstruct companies so that individuals can leverage marketing and psychology to grow exponentially.

I will say I do find this a little wordy. However, if you are looking to grow exponentially this is the person for you.

He also adds credibility by saying where he works and has used on his profile.

NOTE: The cool thing about twitter is you can add tags which helps with searchability.

Meet Harry.

He is the owner of marketingexamples.com

His bio is VERY compelling.

You either want his six tips every Monday or not.

He also mentions how many people are subscribed to it.

I truly hope these tips and examples were helpful.
