How To Set New Years Resolutions for your Business (Complete Annual Planning Guide for 2023) | Kelsey Reidl, Marketing Consultant

There are all of these memes circulating that “nothing happens between Christmas and New Years” and everyone apparently loses track of the days, but if you’re an entrepreneur it is my bet that you’ve been dreaming about the New Year and doing some Annual Business Planning!

Now, I am not someone who is very structured or rigid with my New Years goal setting, but I do like to have a casual ongoing practice that keeps me rooted in what’s important each year.

I also want to ensure that my Year At A Glance is filled in (each month we know what product to focus on, when our launches are happening, any promotional windows and recurring themes and holidays) so that my team knows what to expect month by month.

In my opinion, goal setting doesn’t need to be complicated or take you 100’s of hours. It just needs to get done so that you have an anchor to guide your ship, as you sail ahead into a new calendar year.

The New Year brings with it a fresh opportunity for you to grow your business and make small changes that will lead to massive growth, and my hope is that you’re energized and ready to tackle the opportunities in front of you.

It’s important to remind yourself that…

  • Now more than ever, your voice needs to be heard.

  • Now more than ever, you have an opportunity to create meaningful change with your product or service.

  • Now more than ever, your solution can make a difference.

  • Now more than ever, there's an opportunity to rise up while others are falling behind or staying stagnant.

  • And now more than ever, you can impact communities and leave a legacy on this Earth.

The possibilities are truly endless!

Are you ready to make 2023 the most successful year you've had in business?

If you said yes, it's time to plan for Success, Growth & Profit this year.

Let’s go!

Here’s a sneak peak of the 6 step process that we’ll be going through…

  1. Reflect - Look back before you look ahead!

  2. Visionary Moonshot - Allow yourself to dream of all that’s possible, and cast a vision for your business that’s much bigger than what you have today!

  3. The Foundation - The basics of your business that often get forgotten, but shouldn't be!

  4. Branding - You're here to build a brand that stands out, not that blends in

  5. Marketing & Community Growth - Reconnect with your inner marketer and your superhero relationship-builder, and prepare for massive growth

  6. Next Level Success Tips - A few last things to reflect on as you prepare for the New Year

  1. Step One: Reflection

Before we look forwards, we must start by reflecting on how the last 12 month have gone, so that we have a starting point.

"Self reflection is the Ultimate School of Wisdom."

Let's start by calculating your Business Success Score based on how the past 12 months have been. Score yourself between 1 and 3 on each of the following statements and add them up for a total score out of /66

2. Cast Your Vision for 2023

"Things become more possible, the bolder they become"

What is your vision for the New Year?

It's the bolder quest... the North Star!

It's that *thing* that drives you to succeed and do hard laborious work, even when you don't want to get out of bed some days (it happens to all of us!)

Vision drives us to be better, dream bigger, and think outside the box.

  • Is Your Business Vision Clear? (Yes / No)

  • If Your Your Big Vision Came True, Would It Impact Anyone Besides Yourself?( Y / N )

  • Write Down Your Business Vision (Aka Your Visionary Moonshot)

  • What Would Need To Be True For This Vision To Become A Reality?

  • Did This Years Actions All Point Towards The Accomplishment Of This Vision?

  • How Would You Feel If You Accomplished This Vision?

You will never win fame and fortune unless you invent big ideas. It takes a big idea to attract the attention of consumers and get them to buy your product. Unless your advertising contains a big idea, it will passlike a ship in the night.”

- David Ogilvy

Your Vision For Your Income, Revenue & Finances

  • What Is Your Income Goal In The Next 12 Months?

  • Which Money Making Programs, Products Or Services Will You Be Focused On In The Next 12 Months?

  • How Many Of Those Do You Need To Sell In Order To Meet Your Income Goal?

  • Write Yourself Your Paycheque For Next Year...

3. Inspect Your Business Foundation

Every year, we need to inspect the foundation of our Business and ask questions like…

  • Are we clear on ‘the main objective’ this year

  • Have you clearly defined our Dream Client

  • Do we need to improve or refine our product, program or service?

  • Do our tech tools need to be optimized?

  • Are we raising our prices this year?

  • Are there any leaks in our lead generation and client acquisition funnel?

If necessary, make changes to these essential components before doing anything else.

Here are a few more questions for reflection…

  • How Many Dream Clients Are You Working With?

  • How Many Dream Clients Would You Like To Be Bringing In Each Month?

  • When You Line Up Against 3 Of Your Competitors, What Sets You Apart?

  • Why Should People Choose You?

  • What Exactly Is Your Transformation?

  • How Are You Clearly Showcasing It To Your Dream Clients?

  • Do You Make It So Easy For People To Say Yes And To Purchase From You, Or Is There Friction In The Purchasing Process?

  • How Can You Make It Effortless For Someone To Buy From You Or To Book A Discovery Call With You?

4. Energize Your Brand

Let’s talk about your businesses Core Values. They’re not just words on paper! They are powerful guiding principles that direct you towards your Big Vision.

Have you written out the Core Values of your business?

If you have, that’s great! I’d love to know if they inspire you and motivate you to achieve your big vision everyday.  Do they have you jumping out of bed each morning?

As the C.V.O of your business, it is essential that you feel connected to your Core Values.

If you don’t have Core Values established yet, I’d love to share a quick exercise that can help you get started!

Without core values, your business is like a tree without deep roots. It may be standing tall and strong for now, but it's not going to last long in tough times. Define your core values and make sure they are at the heart of everything you do - from marketing to creative time.

All you need is some time, a pen and paper, and a willingness to reflect on some of the Peaks & Valleys of your life that have made you into the person and business owner that you are, today!

Are you ready to discover your business Core Values?

Simply follow these 3 steps…

1. What are some of the peaks & valleys you’ve encountered in your life, up until this point? Reflect on moments where you were at your ‘best’ and moments where you nearly hit ‘rock bottom’

If you want to complete the other 2 steps, click here to read the full blog on How To Write Your Business Core Values >>

5. Marketing & Community Growth

Before there was “marketing” there was common sense.

Let's logically think about the best way to reach more of your Dream Clients, in a way that they are receptive to!

  • What Is Your Consistent Weekly Content That You Produce?

  • How Can Your Dream Clients "Try You On For Size"(Experiential)?

  • What Strategic Partnerships Do You Have In Place To Support Your Growth & Your Increased Reach?

  • Where Do Your Dream Clients Find Out About Products & Services Like Yours?

What's your current "Marketing Wheel"?

Fill in the diagram below with one marketing effort on each spoke (ex: Instagram, Email Newsletter, Podcast, etc.)

Rate each effort on a scale of 1-3 based on effectiveness at growing your audience and generating qualified leads.

Which can you eliminate?

What could you add that would make a big impact?

6. Next level success tips

a) Learn, apply, grow, repeat.

If you're always learning, always taking action, always paying attention to the current themes around you, and always solving problems-- you'll always have a successful business.

b) Do you approach each day with a critical eye & with focused attention on what needs to get done?

Visionary Tip: surround yourself with visionaries, dreamers and peers who are also chasing dreams like you are.

We all hit our "upper limits" in business on occasion, and if we're not around people who can pull us into a new thought pattern, we stay stagnant.

c) Be your own Brand Evangelist, first.

Be someone who is excited about your product or service & created a community of people who feel the same.

This is the most effective, cost effective, and time-honoured marketing strategy that there ever was. Future-cast what could prevent you from hitting your goals.

d) Predict what will get in your way of achieving great things this year and then outline how you'll overcome these road blocks.

They'll have less of a chance of interfering if you have already anticipated them.

e) Affirm what you want.

Write out 3 affirmations (check Pinterest if you need help) that will help you overcome 3 of your anticipated blocks and then read them daily.

f) Visualize what you want

Visualization is one of the *most* powerful strategies for creating the life you want. Consider it the Dress Rehearsal for what's to come. Take 30 seconds to close your eyes and to visualize the health, relationship, or career accomplishments that you desire. Imprint this vision in your mind & play it back every single day.

g) From James Clear: Have a Singular Focus

Goal competition says that one of the greatest barriers to achieving your goals is the other goals you have. You need to choose one thing and ruthlessly eliminate everything else, until it's accomplished.

h) Stay relevant

Make sure that you know about current themes, hot topics, upcoming events that you can piggyback on in your marketing campaigns and promotional efforts
