Bringing a dead Facebook group back to life can be challenging but with the right tools and tips, it can be done!

Is your Facebook group struggling to get traction?

Are you looking for ways to revive it?

Are you wondering if Facebook is still relevant?

These are all very valid questions.

Afterall, it takes a lot of time and energy to create valuable content for a Facebook Group and if it’s not going to provide a Return On Investment you might be better off to archive your group.

To find out whether you can revive your group, dive into this blog!

I share tips on how to add new life to your group and get your audience engaged with your content.

1. Super-Focus Your Facebook Group!

It's hard to know where to start when you're reviving a Facebook Group, but I can say with certainty that the first thing you’ll want to do is to go back to basics.

There are a few things to think about including - who is your group for, what problem do they have that you can solve, what content should you share?

Be very specific when you answer these questions!

A key component to a successful Facebook Group curating a group of people who share a similar paint point or dream come true outcome. This is the only way to grow a tight knit group!

For example,

  1. Instead of launching an Adventurous Women’s Group  make it an Adventurous Women in Toronto, Ontario Group.

  2. Instead of launching a group for Entrepreneurs launch the group for Canadian Entrepreneurs Scaling from 6 to 7 Figures

  3. Instead of launching a Vegan Bodybuilders Group launch a group for Vegan Bodybuilder Recipe Sharing Group

Adding an extra level of specificity will ensure that you get the right people joining your group, and that you repel people who will not benefit from your group!

2. Post Engaging Content

I know that you hear that “you need to boost your engagement” but what does that really mean?

For starters, a Facebook Group is NOT a one way conversation (aka - you are not the master and they are not the minions). You can’t expect your community to engage in your content if you are preaching at them and NEVER ask for their feedback and opinions.

The most successful Facebook Groups facilitate conversations between the members and the creator often takes a back seat!

So how can we get the members chatting and creating dialogue?

Start by posting content that simply asks for a YES / NO response. Here’s an example…

Other ways you can increase engagement include…

  • Spotlighting community members in order to humanize the group

  • Asking everyone what their favourite ______ is (everyone loves to share an opinion!)

  • Sharing some real life challenges happening inside your business / story-telling

Psssst.

Want me to let you in on a little secret? The Facebook Group post that ALWAYS gets me the most engagement is…

‘What book are you currently reading? I’m in need of something new!’

Trust me on this one and try it for yourself! Everyone loves to share what they’re reading.

  • If you are in the field of marketing you could ask “What marketing book are you reading right now”

  • If you had a group of adventurous women, you could ask “What adventure movie or book have you recently read?”

  • If you have a group of moms, you could ask “What is the best parenting book you’ve read lately?”

3. Facebook Joining Questions: Do You Need to Modify / Change Yours?

Joining questions is not only a great way to weed out individuals which aren’t the right fit for your community but it’s also an amazing opportunity to learn about your members and why they are devoting time and attention to your group.

When you have more data points about who is inside the Facebook Group you can better build relationships and relevant content for them.

Don’t be afraid to be selective and strict with who you allow into the community. You’re allowed to decline members based on the responses to the Joining Questions, if they’re not a good fit for the group.

Never forget - Quality over Quantity.

p.s. An often missed opportunity in creating your joining questions is capturing email addresses for your mailing list.

In exchange, you can provide them with a free piece of exclusive content.

Here’s an example:

4. Track metrics & analyze your top performing posts

If you are not currently checking the analytics inside of your Facebook Group, you are missing out on some valuable insights and data!

These metrics are useful to determine the type of content your audience is enjoying and also to help you identify which content  is not performing well.

As business owners we spend so much time creating content, but very few of us actually analyze our high performing and low performing content.

If the community isn't responding or engaging to your content right now, go back to the drawing board and evaluate what's happening.

At the end of the day, it is your job as a content creator to know how to best serve your audience.

Personally, I would recommend reviewing your analytics on a monthly basis as it will provide you consistent guidance on what type of content to create for the following months.

The insights on Facebook also identify which individuals inside your Facebook are your highest contributors (aka your superfans). Make sure you are taking the time to reward the group superfans by showing appreciation, and by providing them with exclusive information or opportunities to connect with you.

5. Host a Challenge Inside of the Group to Boost Engagement

Challenges are really fun and effective ways to boost engagement inside of a Facebook Group.

If you’re not familiar with what a challenge is, it’s generally a 3 or 5 day event where you attract participants with a similar challenge and then you teach them 1 new thing each day with hopes that they get results and have success by the end!

Example include:

  • 3 Days to Become a Better Conversion Copywriter

  • 5 Day Yoga and Flexibility Challenge for New Moms

  • 7 Day Plant-Based Meal Challenge

Is there a challenge that you could host in order to revive your dead Facebook Group?

What could your members truly benefit from?

What are you excited to promote and teach right now?

What is a small transformation you could take your members through?

From there, you can plan out the content and pick a start date!

To close out this blog, I want to let you know that resuscitating a dead Facebook group can be difficult, but it’s not impossible.

You may need to start by reconsidering the positioning of your group and deciding what value proposition you can offer to new and current members - and then you activate the other tips inside of this post!

Once you have a clear idea of who you are targeting and what benefits they will receive from joining your group, it becomes easier to create engaging content that will keep people coming back for more.

Let me know if any of these tips help revive your Facebook group!
