Yes, it’s a career.
Yes, I work really damn hard to make my business thrive, by providing consistent value to my essential oil community.
No, I didn’t ever imagine myself ‘walking this path’…
My journey into the Network Marketing Industry totally came by surprise!
It came by surprise not only to me, but also to my former colleagues, my family, my friends, etc…
People who have never researched the industry often think there’s some sort of pyramid scheme involved, or some way that money is made with shame… rest assured, none of that is true or should be worried about. In fact, pyramid schemes are illegal – so please stop calling it that.
I’ve learned to shrug these comments off at this point, and I understand where these judgments come from. I mean, I had the exact same thoughts only a few years ago, and right up until the day that I decided to learn everything possible about what direct sales was and how it was a completely legitimate industry that I wanted to be involved in.
After being let go from 2 of my dream jobs before turning 26 years old, I realized that working to build someone else’s dream was not at ALL my dream. I wanted to be an entrepreneur, and to have my own business. At the time, I didn’t know exactly WHAT business I would start, though…
Some of my options included:
- Owning a restaurant
- Starting a fitness studio
- Creating an integrative wellness office
- Opening a coffee shop or smoothie bar
As much as I loved all of these ideas, and considered each and every one of them with a certain degree of seriousness– the fire was never fully there to get the business plan started.
Here’s what I knew for sure when considering a brick & mortar business:
- I didn’t like the idea of such steep startup costs
- I wanted to share my passion for natural health + wellness on a broader scale, and not be tied to one particular location or city
- I didn’t want to re-invent the wheel
- I wanted to build a business part-time, while still making money through other streams of income
So… what was I meant to do?
Well.. one thing that I realized was that all of my previous career experience had exactly prepped me for a journey into network marketing, and as I got in touch with some wildly successful girl bosses, I found out that most of them had made their millions through this industry.
In fact, did you know that more than 70% of the world’s 7-figure earners did so through network marketing businesses?
I was entrepreneurial, passionate about sharing products that I loved, enjoyed connecting with others, and had a knack for sales + marketing. And most of all, I had a hunch that I wanted to be the master of my own schedule and vacation time, forever. That’s just how I thrive. The 9-5 makes me feel icky and sick to my stomach.
So I jumped in. I researched all I could about how to be successful in direct sales; I essentially put myself ‘back in school’ just like you would do with ANY career change.
It’s funny, because people often have this vision of network marketing being a get rich quick plan. Which CAN happen, but not without the necessary development & learning! It’s not rocket science in my eyes. To be amazing, you have to study the industry and make it a priority to work on my skills each day.
More on my journey with doTERRA…
I absolutely love doTERRA essential oils and the all natural products that they offer, but what I love more is the business opportunity around these products. It lights me up inside to coach others how to build their business, in a unique + authentic way.
Within 2 months of building my business, I hit elite. Not because I knew what I was doing, but because I was curious and driven to succeed. I was willing to be coached, and I was willing to take advice and mentorship.
Network Marketing for Young People
Let me break down further why I chose this industry in my 20’s, after spending 5+ years in post-secondary education obtaining a degree in Business and a diploma in Nutrition.
From the moment I graduated high school, I wanted a salary job that would give me steady income to live my life with a certain degree of freedom. So, after University I got one and loved the paychecks – who wouldn’t right? Money is great and though I’m not a spender, I’ll be the first to say it’s a great feeling to live your life liberally knowing that you can vacation or buy delicious food with little to no financial stress.
Years into my career, I realized I was worth more than my salary. I gave a LOT of time to my job, with little room for growth and not a lot of freedom. Hmmm. Something felt very restraining here, and again I was ready for ‘more’.
In my corporate job, my creativity maxed out at my bosses agenda. My ideas never got past management. My sales targets were created by someone I had never met… I cannot discount all of this experience though, because I learned SO much about sales, marketing, finance, corporate culture, and ALL of the things that would make me thrive in network marketing.
My thoughts at one point were that “I’m ready for more”.
This is when the opportunity of networking marketing came my way, and I began to build my own business around an existing product (doTERRA essential oils). Now my vision is to be someone who breaks the stereotypes that surround this less-traditional, yet professional, career path.
It’s not easy to speak up on this, knowing that 1 out of every 5 people will try to prove me wrong and leave their harsh comments without consideration– but I know it needs to be said.
This is not the post where I’ll tell you all about the oils or the business side of things, but rather where I share WHY I’ve found myself along this path and how I intend to break the mold.
- Have a positive impact on the direct sales industry
- Show young people that network marketing is a viable career option, but only when you BELIEVE IN THE PRODUCT AND ARE A USER YOURSELF
- Educate women how to build a biz which provides them with residual income
- Break down the barriers to entry, anyone can do it
- Mentor 5 new women each month to follow the same systems I have to find success in this business.
Finally, let me summarize why I joined network marketing.
In life, in your current career, in your thoughts – be sure you know and recognize your Why & Vision behind all that you do. Write it out, get clear, and ensure it aligns with your long term goals and ambitions (i.e. Do you want to help Mom’s kick toxic products out of their homes & away from their kids? Then start a blog or Instagram account with DIY recipes and if it feels aligned, choose a company like doTERRA to recommend in your recipes – since people will eventually start looking to you for recommendations!)
Okay, that’s it for now you guys.
I’ll leave you with a little summary, in case you skipped to the bottom for quick reading!
High Level: Why I Joined a Network Marketing Company
- The women I admired most were doing it, and I realized that I too was capable and ready for this opportunity also
- I’ve always been entrepreneurial
- I wanted to coach women
- I had been released from 2 jobs by the age of 27. As long as j work for someone else, I’m neglecting my OWN dream
